RIDDOR Reporting Guidelines Update

August 2024

We want to inform you about the latest updates from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)  regarding the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases, and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR). These updates are intended to streamline the reporting process and make it more straightforward, while the core legal requirements remain unchanged.

Updates to the Guidance

  • Direct Links to Guidance – the HSE has introduced more direct links to information on reportable incidents, making it easier to determine if a report is necessary
  • Clarified Reporting Roles – the guidelines now offer clearer instructions on who should and should not report under RIDDOR
  • Definition of Work-Related Accidents – there is improved guidance on what constitutes a ‘work-related’ accident
  • Occupational Disease Reporting – enhanced clarity on when an occupational disease is not reportable
  • Over-7-Day Absence Reporting – the guidance now provides better clarity on when to report absences that extend beyond seven days

Updates to the Forms

  • Severity of Injuries – questions about the severity of injuries are now at the beginning of the forms, helping you quickly decide if an incident is reportable
  • Pop-Up Messages – new pop-up messages will redirect you if the incident is not reportable
  • User-Friendly Forms – improved guidance throughout the forms to make them easier to use.

We recommend that everyone responsible for incident reporting reviews these updates on the HSE website here. Familiarising yourself with these changes ensures compliance and enhances workplace safety.
