Drugs and Alcohol – Workplace Awareness

This course is designed to help learners understand the effects of drugs and alcohol in the workplace, the legal responsibilities of both employers and employees, and how to create a safe, supportive working environment.

Whether you are an employee, line manager, or part of HR/occupational health, this course will provide practical guidance and knowledge to help manage risks effectively.


By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Understand the legal framework governing drugs and alcohol in the UK workplace, including HSE requirements and relevant legislation.
  2. Identify the responsibilities of employers and employees to ensure a safe and compliant workplace.
  3. Recognise the effects of alcohol, illegal drugs, and prescription medication on workplace performance, safety, and wellbeing.
  4. Understand the purpose and elements of a workplace drugs and alcohol policy, including testing, confidentiality, and support measures.
  5. Promote employee wellbeing through early intervention, support pathways, and fostering a positive workplace culture.
  6. Apply knowledge to practical situations, recognising signs of impairment and knowing how to respond appropriately.
