Working Safely at Height

Work at height remains one of the leading causes of workplace fatalities in the United Kingdom. Many incidents and near misses result from factors such as missing floor gratings, unsafe use of ladders, fragile roofs, unprotected openings and pits, scaffolding failures, misuse of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs), incorrect use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintenance issues associated with crushers and mobile plant, including failed catwalks on mobile crushers and screens.

Work at height activities must be planned and managed with the Hierarchy of Controls in mind, prioritising the elimination of the need to work at height wherever possible.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the risks associated with working at height and recognise common causes of incidents and near misses.
  • Identify key hazards such as missing floor gratings, fragile roofs, scaffold failures, and improper use of ladders, MEWPs, and PPE.
  • Understand the application of the Hierarchy of Controls when planning and managing work at height.
  • Describe strategies for eliminating or reducing the need to work at height wherever possible.
  • Apply best practice principles to improve safety and compliance in activities involving work at height.

Approximate Completion Time: 60 minutes
