Introduction to Health & Safety

Organisations typically implement management processes to address payroll, personnel matters, finance, and quality control—health and safety management should be approached in a similar way. To assist in complying with legal obligations, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) advocates for a practical and commonsense approach to managing health and safety. It should be seamlessly integrated into the daily operations of the organisation, becoming a key component of workplace behaviours and attitudes. The Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) model provides a structured approach to sustaining and continuously improving health and safety management.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of integrating health and safety management into organisational processes.
  • Explain the concept of the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle and its role in continuous health and safety improvement.
  • Recognise the benefits of adopting a practical approach to health and safety management.
  • Develop a health and safety management system that aligns with both legal requirements and organisational objectives.
  • Implement strategies for planning, executing, and reviewing health and safety practices within the workplace.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement in health and safety through effective monitoring and feedback mechanisms.
  • Demonstrate how to apply PDCA to achieve a sustainable and proactive health and safety management system.
