Summer Safety

Summer can bring bright skies, longer days, and warmer weather — but it also brings unique safety challenges in the workplace. Rising temperatures, stronger UV exposure, and increased outdoor hazards can affect health, wellbeing, and productivity.

In the UK, there is no legal maximum workplace temperature, but employers have a duty to assess heat risks and take reasonable steps to protect workers. This includes ensuring access to shade, rest breaks, and drinking water, and adjusting work patterns when conditions demand it.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Recognise the common risks associated with working in summer conditions, including heat stress, sun exposure, and seasonal hazards.
  2. Identify early signs and symptoms of heat-related illness and outline the correct first aid responses.
  3. Apply sun safety measures, hydration strategies, and personal protective equipment to reduce risk.
  4. Respond appropriately to insect stings, allergic reactions, and other seasonal risks.
  5. Contribute to a safe working environment by reporting heat hazards and supporting team safety.
